This issue is going to be a bit different, it’s TV themed! Here are some shows you can DVR or TiVo that are music related, of varying quality.

Subterranean
Subterranean @ MTV2

This show recalls the days of yore when 120 Minutes was the best thing going on MTV (and probably TV in general). Features a guest artist talking about their current album or single, and a lot of really cool videos. This week was Holy Ghost guest artist, who sound like a disco New Order to some extent. In fact, they deliberately tried to recreate New Order’s first video for Confusion, and even got New York DJ Arthur Baker that was in the original New Order video to be in their video – too cool! Their new single is available here for download for FREE!

Subterranean also featured videos from bands like Fever Ray (of the Knife), The Cinematics, and others. Check it out!

Embedded @ CURNT

This is a cool show I just started watching that follows an artist around for a specific period of time doing everything they do, and not just playing music, either. The most recent one I watched was Mos Def @ Japan on tour, pretty cool as he bought tons of clothes in the Harajuku district of Japan. Next up, Silversun Pickups!

ACL
Austin City Limits @ PBS

Lastly, check out PBS’ special documentary featuring artists of the Austin City Limits festival. This week was Andrew Bird and St. Vincent. While this is a “what you see is what you get” documentary of live music, and doesn’t have all the polished production of the other shows I profiled, still a great way to check out cool artists you would not otherwise get to see.

Happy Halloween!

Cheers!
Dave

Thanks for subscribing to the DJ² music newsletter, and welcome to my first issue! I’ll be covering various music topics, including recommended playlists, free download samples, new music reviews, old music reviews and even cool magazine recommendations.

For those Rock Fans out there, Green Day’s new album 21st Century Breakdown, produced by industry icon Butch Vig, appears to be a very solid and worthwhile effort. I really like the second single, 21 Guns, a lot. I haven’t totally decided on the entire album, but if you’re a Green Day fan, it’s probably a no-brainer. These guys have been doing it right for a long time now, they really haven’t done anything I haven’t enjoyed.

Metric
Also, the new Metric album Fantasies is fantastic. I first got into Metric on “Old World Underground…”, but this album really pulls you in. They have a unique sound that encompasses a mix of new wave, synth pop and dance rock that really flows well. After about 3 or 4 listens you’ll really see the quality of the new album. You may have heard a few singles off Fantasies, including “Help I’m Alive” and “Gimme Sympathy”. “Sick Muse” and “Gold Guns Girls” are my personal favorites, and “Stadium Love” is a stand out as well. It is interesting to note that Emily Haines, vocalist for Metric, has also done guest vocals for Crystal Method and Delerium among others (”Stopwatch Hearts” single by Delerium that she did guest vocals on is particularly good.

Jj No2
For the Swedish pop fans, Jj’s new album, No 2, is nothing short of pure dream, electropop bliss, with a cool beach-party vibe. I’ve been listening to this one non-stop, and I’m going to have to stop listening to it before I ruin it for myself like I did Boat Club. Boat Club is also a swedish pop group, with dreamy, ocean synthesizer vibes as it’s title infers (note if you want to get Boat Club need to get it here through Klicktrack.com, a great deal at less than $6). Both albums are great if you’re a fan of this genre, and Jj is particularly spectacular (shout out to DJ Serge for bringing Jj and Boat Club to my attention).

Oakenfold
On the electronic side, the new Paul Oakenfold DJ album, Perfecto Vegas, is quite good. I’ve been listening to that album pretty much non-stop as well, and it only gets better. DJ albums tend to be love or hate, but this one is pretty good. The vocal tracks in particular really take what would be just another remix album to another level. Great stuff.

Note: Most of my music is purchased through Amazon.com’s digital mp3 site, which features high quality digital mp3 audio for some of the best pricing around. You will be able to find just about anything in this newsletter on Amazon’s mp3 site, and if you haven’t already, be sure and check out their “deal of the day”, they feature a broad range of genre’s and artists from $1.99 – $3.99 for full albums – Check it out!

Thanks for reading! I had a lot more material, but that can wait for next issue. Let me know if there is anything in particular you’d like me to cover. As I said, I will be covering a broad range of music styles, so if you didn’t see anything you like, just wait until next time!
